Completed TryHackMe's Cyber Security 101 learning path
Over the past few months, I’ve really been grinding away at TryHackMe, and I’m happy to say that I’ve finally completed the Cyber Security 101 learning path. I took advantage of TryHackMe’s Black Friday sale and upgraded to a premium subscription. This gave me full access to all of their learning paths, including Cyber Security 101. So far, upgrading to the premium subscription has definitely been worth it, and it is a great value for the money.
The learning path
The Cyber Security 101 learning path consisted of 14 modules and 56 hands-on labs or rooms. This included a wide range of topics, such as Windows and Linux fundamentals, exploitation basics, web hacking, and more. You can view a complete list of the learning path, including its modules and rooms, on the TryHackMe website here.
The certificate says that the course duration was 45 hours. I worked on it over the course of several months, so I know I spent at least that much time on it, if not more. You definitely need to take your time completing it if you really want to absorb and retain all the information.
My favorite part of the course was the Exploitation Basics module and learning about Metasploit and EternalBlue. In the 3 rooms covering Metasploit, I learned about the main components of the Metasploit Framework, including msfconsole, modules, and tools. I also learned about exploitation with Metasploit and Meterpreter. The Blue room was also one of my favorite rooms, as I learned about the EternalBlue exploit and used it to gain access to a Windows machine in the hands-on lab.
The biggest value of this learning path, or TryHackMe in general, is the hands-on aspect. Instead of just learning about theory and memorizing acronyms, you’re gaining hands-on experience with real-world tools like Wireshark and Burp Suite. This helps bridge the gap between theory and practical hands-on application.
What’s next?
Now that I’ve finished the Cyber Security 101 learning path, I plan on continuing with TryHackMe and starting a new learning path. A few of the paths I have in mind are the Jr Penetration Tester, SOC Level 1, and Security Engineer paths. I’m also considering taking the SEC1 professional certification that goes along with the Cyber Security 101 learning path. Lastly, I want to put my skills to the test by completing more CTFs on TryHackMe.
Conclusion
Overall, I really enjoyed the Cyber Security 101 learning path from TryHackMe. I got to experiment with some new tools and gained a lot of valuable knowledge. I recommend the learning path to anyone looking to gain fundamental knowledge and develop hands-on skills in cybersecurity.
